Darren Harris - From the Tools to the Deal

30 May 2026

Darren Harris has 25 years of experience in the building and carpentry industry across New Zealand and Australia, and has now been a real estate agent for nearly 11 years. By his forties, the heavy lifting had taken its toll on his back, and he knew it was time to step off the tools. But the idea of sitting behind a desk all day was not exactly appealing either.

The seed for real estate was planted during smoko conversations with a workmate who had a goal of becoming an agent. They would talk about the industry, the opportunities and what life could look like outside of construction. Those conversations stuck.

After picking up some window and door maintenance work back in New Zealand, Darren found himself thinking: “What am I doing? Why am I still on the tools?” He got his licence and started with LJ Hooker in Hamilton. But the cubicle life was not for him. “I am not someone who thrives sitting behind a desk all day.”

At Arizto, Darren found the freedom he needed. “I can work from wherever I need to, whether that is at a park, the dog run or on the go between appointments. As long as I have got my phone, I can get the job done.” It is a setup that suits his nature and connects back to what he loved about being a carpenter: being outdoors, working in different environments and never doing the same thing twice.

The technology makes everything streamlined and user-friendly. “Our clients can see exactly what is happening at every stage, and the process is very straightforward. From listing through to sold, it is a smooth and simple experience.” With the app and integrated systems running efficiently, Darren can focus more on communication and results.

Darren is direct about the myths in the industry. “Some agents position themselves as the best in the industry, suggesting that buyers choose a property because of the agent or the brand behind it. But the reality is, buyers do not purchase the agent. They purchase the property.” What matters is strong marketing and the right exposure to reach the right buyers.

His advice to sellers draws on his building background. He always recommends decluttering and simplifying spaces so buyers can clearly see the home, not the belongings. Complete any outstanding maintenance, and consider a fresh coat of paint, one of the cheapest and most effective ways to tidy and modernise a property. He also encourages clients to start packing early. “Selling successfully requires a level of emotional detachment, and packing away personal items helps with that. Buyers expect to see some packing boxes in the garage. It reinforces that a move is genuinely happening.”

One of the biggest lessons Darren has learned is not to prejudge a buyer. “Sometimes you can see someone and think they will never buy. Next minute, they are the ones putting in the offer, and good offers at that.”

The local market has seen a noticeable shift recently, with more properties being sold subject to the sale of another property. It reflects a market where strategy and patience are more important than ever.

Outside of real estate, Darren stays connected to his trade roots. He is currently building a tiny house as a side project and restoring a classic Holden. “Real estate is my main priority, but I do enjoy still being on the tools.”
