Glen Thompson - Know Your Neighbourhood, Know Your Market

30 May 2026

Glen Thompson has worked in sales his entire career, including roles with some of the largest companies in the world. He always had an interest in real estate, drawn to an industry where performance is directly linked to effort, relationships and results. When Covid hit and he returned from Melbourne during the lockdown period, the timing felt right to make the move. An opportunity came up with a boutique agency, and Glen decided to back himself.

Five years on, he is enjoying it more than any other role he has had. “It is challenging, rewarding, and no two days are ever the same.” Glen is the current #1 Arizto Salesperson in Nelson and Tasman for 2025/2026, driven by consistent results and strong performance across the region.

At Arizto, Glen found a model that has genuinely changed the real estate landscape. “It has been a true disrupter in the industry, and the growth we are seeing, attracting experienced, high-performing agents from across the country, speaks volumes.” What he enjoys most is that the model genuinely benefits the vendor. No upfront costs and no sale, no fee removes a lot of stress and risk. “In an uncertain economic climate, that has been a real advantage for sellers.”

If Glen could give his younger self one piece of advice, it would be this: pick an area and stick to it. “Become the person who knows that neighbourhood inside out. Door knock, drop flyers, talk to people, update them on sales, even if they are not yours, and keep them informed about what is happening locally. Over time, you become the go-to person because people see you consistently.”

The biggest thing Arizto offers, in Glen’s view, is removing risk for the vendor. “We take care of the marketing upfront, so they are not out of pocket before they even know if the property will sell.” In Nelson, the growing number of Arizto signboards around town shows the model is working.

Glen believes that in any service-based industry, people value honest advice from someone they trust. “Good local knowledge and clear communication are a big part of that. Keeping people informed, explaining things properly and giving realistic guidance. Once trust is established, everything else becomes a by-product of that relationship.”

He is keen to bust the myth that all agents are the same. “Experience, work ethic, local knowledge and negotiation skills vary greatly.” And the idea that agents simply put a sign up and wait? “There is a lot happening behind the scenes: strategy, buyer follow-up, feedback management, negotiation and problem-solving.”

His advice to sellers is detailed and practical. Fresh bark in the garden, lawns mowed, hedges trimmed, general tidying, paint touch-ups, lightbulbs replaced, minor cracks sealed and everything decluttered so buyers can feel the sense of space. “We are no longer in the Covid boom market. With over 1,000 properties online, buyers have a choice. Standing out visually and pricing in line with current market conditions is crucial.”

The biggest lesson Glen has learned is that every property has a story, because every client has a story. “People sell for all sorts of reasons: upsizing, downsizing, relocating, health changes, financial pressures, or simply a new chapter. When you understand the why behind the move, you can guide them properly and make the process smoother for everyone involved.”

Glen is based in Nelson, one of the most desirable places to live in New Zealand. “The lifestyle is a huge drawcard. Beaches, walking and biking tracks, the ability to be outdoors year-round. The climate is fantastic. It is a place where people can genuinely slow down and enjoy life, which is why we see consistent interest from both locals and those relocating.”

For Glen, every sale feels memorable. “There is the excitement of buyers securing a new home and placing their trust in you, and then there are vendors who may be navigating big life changes. Being part of that journey and helping both sides reach a positive outcome is something I never take for granted.”

Outside of real estate, Glen and his wife love walking, and he has recently discovered a passion for gardening he did not know he had. They enjoy catching up with their adult children, and Glen is an unapologetic animal lover who spends time with his own pets and supports animal charities wherever possible.

If he could list a property for any celebrity? “Sir Peter Jackson. He has built something extraordinary from New Zealand to the world stage, and I admire that kind of vision and commitment. It would be pretty special to find him a great Nelson retreat.”
